The Hochmuth Adventures 2019 - Discovering New Places, Rediscovering Old Ones: Trip to Italy - Wednesday, January 16, 2019 - Day 4

Busy, busy day! Got up, had breakfast and we're off walking by 8:30. Our first stop was Piazza Berberini, just one of the many beautiful piazzas in this city. Then we went into the Convento de la Cappucini - where the Cappuchin monks had a chapel made with bones - we didn't go in - too creepy - but we saw some pictures. From there it was onto the Trinita del Monti Church and the Spanish Steps. We walked down and enjoyed the views of Rome off in the distance. Next stop was Trevi Fountain, another splendid piece of sculpture! From Trevi Fountain it was only a short walk to the Pantheon, another amazing architectural wonder. Then we were on to Piazza Navona, which supposedly holds markets etc. but I think it was off season and nothing much was happening there but they did have 3 fountains in the square. Next up was Campo do Fiori, which did have an actual market. We stopped at a little cafe and had some tea and a pastry around 11:30. Piazza del Venecia was next, followed by the palace or should I say Palazzo de Vittorio Emanuel, father of Italy. This was a monster building honoring his place in Italy's history. From there we wandered a bit on our way to the Basilica of St John Lantern, San Giovanni Laterano. We did pick up the metro by the Coliseum, got off at Termini and got on another line to get to the church. On our way back we stopped at a market but it was mostly purses and leather goods and I don't have room in my suitcase for any of that. Took the metro back to Termini and stopped at the Station for a beer. All that walking works up a thirst. Walked back to the hotel and arrived about 4:30. Time for a little rest and to refresh before going out for dinner. So far today I'm almost at 9 miles so I'm sure it will be at least another 10 mile day! I figured before we leave we will have covered over 25 miles of Rome on foot.
